About three weeks ago, the former-pop-star wife of Utah Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko made the startling declaration in an ESPN the Magazine interview that since he spends so much time travelling for his job, the temptation of infidelity is so great that she gives him an "allowance" of one night per year with another woman. She put it this way:
"What's forbidden is always desirable. And athletes, particularly men, are susceptible to all the things they are offered. It's the same way raising children - if I tell my child, 'No pizza, no pizza, no pizza,' what does he want more than anything? Pizza... If I know about it, it's not cheating."
Not surprisingly, this sent shockwaves through the sporting world. Multiple columns, papers, message board posts were all hailing Mrs. Kirilenko as the "best wife ever" and Andrei as the luckiest man alive. A column on Fox Sports had this to say:
"This, we feel, is perhaps the perfect marriage. If all marriages operated like this, divorce attorneys would be as uncommon as mad cow disease, and Dr. Phil would be installing satellite dishes and sweating his mortgage. In other words, life would be better in so many ways..."
I found this to be yet another interesting counterpoint to the Biblical value of marital faithfulness, which is something that Jesus, Paul, and other writers all taught about. Why should a husband love and be with only one wife, and vice versa? In general, it seems that the values of the world (or at least, Western culture) in this arena seem to gravitate to the very capitalist "more is better" mode of thinking. For example, we jokingly refer to marriage with prison references like "the ol' ball-and-chain", and many people now take the attitude that Biblical teaching on marital infidelity, as well as many other "sins", is in fact just an arbitrary rule guilting people into staying away from something "good". In other words, commitment = imprisonment.
Nick Collison, a power forward on the Seattle SuperSonics, made an insightful response to the first quote above from Kirilenko's wife: "If you give a kid pizza, he might want a different kind of pizza. It might get worse."
I think this sums it up nicely. The Bible's teachings on holiness are not intended to be arbitrary rules to keep us imprisoned from the good things in life. Rather, they're intended to teach the discipline that one might teach a child. If you gave a kid pizza every time he wanted one, this will have undesirable outcomes for him - physical malnutrition and perhaps obesity, and perhaps a psychological sense of entitlement.
It's when we've learned how to be disciplined in mind, body, and spirit, that we can identify those things in life that are truly good and have lasting meaning and value. One of those can be a healthy, faithful, loving, and servant-like relationship with a spouse where each can find completion in the other. The perfect marriage isn't one where each side gives the other the supposed "freedom" to break a special commitment at will - rather, I think that a perfect marriage will find that each partner has developed such love for one another that they'd have no desire to turn elsewhere.

i saw that article also and it made me cringe. sad to see how low people's standards have gone when it comes to the committment of marriage.
i'd hate to be nick collison's son.
Through the article, it is not hard to see the motivation "How to keep her husband's heart?" But if Andrei had a smart mind, the way would reduce his reputation and career in basketball field from her wife's announce and untrust.
Thing happened has two sides.
1.Their marriage has problem currently.
2. They make "false/noise" news to attract to Fans for more benifits.
Such as the news look like flash a pan after several months. The topic will change into several possibilities.
A. "I do not know why thing will become worse..since I let him free..." with tears.
B. "I can belive why I got AIDS..."
C. "I can not believe my fedlity wife also do the same way without allowance.."
D. "I regrate what I have done..."
E. "Let us divorce...I can not endure..."
F. "Honey! Let us make another news to sell..we can earn $$$."
Anyway, the news is not worth to think deeper because it is risk to "Dance with evil". Evil likes to see "us", to be mad or anger or scorn or aggressive. It will reduce my cell and deter my spirit.
It reminds of me one of Pastors used to preach when we meet "phenomenon", several suggestions are "Do not touch and do not think and keep it away." Any argument would reveal what our thought is in all circumstance to give "it" more chance to make more sufferings in the world.
Regardless of this, commentiment is not "grave" but it is likely the "promised" as rainball. Perfect marriage, blessed, is built on God's relationship.
Here are several truly perfect marriages as I know:
1. same vaule. the couples have same vaule on God's way, with fatih, so that they can overcome tough thing by God's love and words to accept one another who is different from you. For what? to please Him.
2. same vision. the couples have same vision to marry "clearly", which is God's plan /will because God uses both to spreard message to be testimony in front of non-believers or believers to glorify God.
3. same weakness. the couple's marriage is to be made "perfect" in their weakness,in order to glorify God's grace and marcy.
4. same responses: the couple is waiting for God's response whether the person whom she/he met is the Mr.or Ms right through praying when asking.
All the marriges are supposed to be relative to God's will, and add a piece of message (testimony). God is always priority.
Unluckily, most of people,85-90%% still follow with personal desire and passion to chose marrige. Thus, after 3 months or one year, the marriage starts to go down, offended or stumbled even lose faith away from religion.
But a question, man and female is supposed to understand or sense "How to be a wife/Husband from God's love and wisdom? not interset or hobbies before marriage."
There is joke truly happened in church for long time ago. A guy brougt a ring in front of a woman saying, "You happened in my dream last night, so I think you are my Ms.right. We have to marry." Guess what? The sister said to the brother, "You had better pray God and ask why I do not have any dream or message."
Finally, the publish is great.
anonymous is like dr. phil with a christian spin. how did you become so wise? =P
I am not dr.phil with...spin.
The more trust in Him and the meaning of Bible, the greater we know the knowledge of secret.
"10 Throgh the Spirit, however, God has revealed it to us; for the Spirit fathoms everything, even the deep things of God" (1 Corinthians 2:10)
God bless!
I agree with Blindman! In order for sacredness to mean something, it must be DIFFERENT. And a sacred marriage means exclusive marriage.
Nice reminder and post.
