that is changing your life: Other than the Bible, I'll say Now Discover Your Strengths (Buckingham and Clifton) which was given to me as a birthday gift by Shal, since I'm reading it right now and it has some interesting insights into how people are wired.
that you've read more than once: Almost all the novels on my bookshelf - various Tom Clancy, Clive Cussler, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, other sci-fi - I like reading a good novel in bed for a while before falling asleep, so I tend to re-read books.
that you'd want on a deserted island: Practical value: some sort of Army Field Manual on wilderness survival. Entertainment value: Probably Lord of the Rings. Spiritual growth: Celebration of Discipline (Foster) or Systematic Theology (Grudem).

Nerd, Geek, or Dork?
This past Sunday after Canaan's Worship in the Park event, Joy made the comment that I was a nerd (I forget the context or what prompted it). In mild self-defense, I claimed that I was a geek, not a nerd, and then challenged her to define it. Well, through the power of the internets, I guess she's off the hook, since this quiz can define it for me!
While I sorta protest... I guess I kinda know in my heart of hearts that I'm somewhat nerdy. After all, at bowling on Tuesday, I attempted to explain to Hanlin that he should use the heaviest bowling ball he can handle by mentioning "F = ma". So... yeah.

So, in honor of Sam, here's the world's shortest personality test.
On the previous extra-long personality DNA test, I think the "analyst" portion is dead-on. That's pretty much how I see myself - someone who can pay attention to something and pick out details and insights, and repeated encounters/viewings/readings will reveal deeper things. However, I'm not very good at being attentive to what's going on ("bob-livious" is a nickname I acquired on our Spain vacation), and I'm not too sure about that "considerate" part.

Astronomer or Astronaut?
Last weekend, I was flipping around the TV and came across the ho-hum "Jurassic Park 3." Certainly not a movie worth much reflection or memory brain cells, but there was one thought-provoking snippet of dialogue from the mouth of Dr. Grant:
Dr. Grant: I have a theory that there are two kinds of boys. There are those that want to be astronomers, and those that want to be astronauts. The astronomer... gets to study these amazing things from a place of complete safety.
Erik: But then you never get to go into space.
Dr. Grant: Exactly. That's the difference between imagining and seeing: to be able to touch them.
I suppose the quote stuck with me because when I was little, for a while I aspired to become an astronomer. I read books on the stars and planets, knew the theories on how they came to be, read up on the Roman mythological figures that were the inspirations for many names... interestingly enough, though, I never really wanted to become an astronaut who was actually walking on the moon or flying to Mars.
I think that mentality has kind of crept into my adult life too. I'm typically more inclined to figure stuff out and understand how things work, rather than exploring the great unknown.
Are you more of an astronomer or astronaut?
I took the "Perfect College Major" quiz and got the following results:
I found it somewhat odd that I tied among three majors for the top spot. I could actually see myself as both an engineer and a philosopher type. Sociology's interesting too, but I was surprised it came up. Just for the record, after the initial round of survey questions, I had to choose one out of the following to break the tie:
1) I enjoy the study of people interactions. (Sociology)
2) I enjoy thinking about the meaning of life, and what it has in store for me. (Philosophy)
3) I enjoy discussions and seeking new ways to approach a problem. (Engineering)
